Christie Handzel

Christie has been a staple in the morning classes since she started back in January. Her dedication and commitment to the gym is unsurpassed only by her consistently positive attitude through difficult times.

We asked her a few questions so we could all get to know her a little better. See her responses below.

1. How long have you been at CrossFit Utica and what got you started?

I started at the end of January when the New You Program that was offered. I saw an ad on Facebook and I had been feeling pretty crummy, and decided to check it out. I honestly didn’t really know what I was getting myself into, but my first thought when I saw the ad was, “I could really use a new Me.” So, I came in for the interview and haven’t looked back since. CrossFit came to me at a time when I really needed something positive and physical for an outlet. This year has been the most challenging ever, in my entire life, so every day, I am so thankful for the ability to be able to be a part of the CrossFit family, and for the awesome friends I have made here. It really means a lot to me.

2. If you could be in the movie of your choice, what movie would you choose and what character would you play?

Hmm I can relate to many characters in many different movies, but right now, I’d say my first thought goes to Wonder Woman. Maybe because I secretly aspire to be like her. How cool would it be to be Wonder Woman?! She’s gorgeous first of all, but more than that, she’s strong, courageous, takes care of people and those that are in need, and she stands up for what she believes in. And she would kick some serious butt in CrossFit too. When I think of her, I also think of inner strength, and that is something that I have really had to dig in and find this past year, more than any other time in my life.

3. Which skill(s) would you love to learn?

Pull ups without a band (I’m so close!) Muscle ups and handstand push-ups.

4. What does a day in the life of Christie look like outside of being a stud Crossitter?

Well, most days I’m working, I’m a hairstylist so I get to help people feel good and look nice everyday. I love my job and my clients and if I were rich, I’d still do it, for free.  I have three teenagers, one in college in PA, (I miss her terribly when she’s gone) and two high schoolers, so they keep me busy and running all the time. I also volunteer a lot at church and I’m a Youth Leader with the teenagers. They are crazy, and full of life and energy. I love working with them and being someone they can come to if they need to talk.

5. Tell us something we don’t already know about you!

I love music. All kinds of music, except that screaming stuff. If I wasn’t a hairstylist I probably would have been a music therapist. I think music can take us to so many places, create emotions in us and help us cope with things too. We all have that one certain song that might spark a memory of an event or certain person. When someone tells me they don’t listen to music, I can’t comprehend. It’s like breathing to me.

I just want to say thank you to all of our coaches for investing their time and energy into all of us. You inspire me so much! Especially to Anthony for being our fearless leader and always pushing us to be the best we can be. One day at a time!
