Jess is one of the longest tenured athletes at CrossFit Utica starting way back in December of 2015. In that time she has also been one of the most consistent athletes from month to month. On top of that, she has been a HUGE help to incoming athletes and drop-ins showing them the ropes as the honorary athlete welcome liaison. We wanted you to get to know Jess a little more so we asked her a few questions to get some insight.
1. How long have you been at CrossFit Utica and what got you started?
I have been at Crossfit Utica for just over two years. I got started after failing to get the results I was looking for on my own at Planet Fitness and doing Insanity. At the time I was going through a break up and it was time for a change so I signed up. I wanted to look and be strong like the girls (that I now recognize as Games athlete a.k.a. Camille LeBlanc-Bazinet) I was following on social media.
2. What’s in your most frequently used emoji tab?
The wink face tongue out emoji for sure 😜, I am pretty sarcastic and that doesn't come across well while texting without some sort of signal.
3. Which skill(s) were you most excited to learn?
Pull ups. I wanted to be that girl that could bust out strict pull ups. From bands on up, that was my first goal walking into Crossfit. **Now, she could easily bust out 6-8 strict pull-ups no problem.**
4. If you could be any animal in the world, what would it be and why?
Tiger. They're just so beautiful and I love the way they move, it's just so smooth and powerful. They're my absolute favorite, and yes, Tigger was also my favorite Winnie the Pooh character.
5. What is your favorite cheat food?
I love food in general, but on the holidays or parties I can do some serious damage to chips and dip.
6. What was the last thing you searched for on Google?
Hahahaha I looked up what hours Sunny's Asian Cuisine was open for me and Steve to go to dinner. **For perspective...Sunny's Restaurant is amazing but closes at random days/times and whenever you really want it, it is likely that they are closed.**
7. What does a day in the life of Jess look like outside of being a stud crossfitter?
I am currently working on a Master's degree, and this summer is my last semester. I work at Utica College, but not on campus, they keep my co-workers and I tucked away downtown. We are an interesting bunch. When the inspiration strikes, I like to paint, usually with lots of color. Right now I'm obsessed with the show "Vikings".
8. Anything else you would like to share?
My favorite graphic novel is "Sandman" by Neil Gaiman. Everyone should try the app 'Calm' if you ever wanted to get into meditation. And a cup of tea is the perfect way to start and end a day :)
