Suzanne has been with us since March of 2017. Her first exposure to CrossFit was when her daughter, Sarah, invited her to come watch her perform an Open workout. The workout consisted of rowing, wall balls, deadlifts and handstand push-ups. After watching her daughter perform a grueling workout, Suzanne thought she would never be able to do CrossFit. Shortly after she signed up and has never looked back. She is a staple in our morning classes and is dedicated to performing her best each and every day. We asked her a few questions and here is what she had to say.
HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN AT PRIME/CROSSFIT UTICA AND WHAT GOT YOU STARTED?
My young adult daughter nudged me for about a year to start CF. My answer was always “thanks, honey, but I could never do that; I’m too old (was 58 at the time), etc.” I had watched her and others do an Open workout and definitely decided I couldn’t do it. . . . .She kept telling me I could scale everything . . . Well, I ended up deciding to try for her, and my first CrossFit class was on April 3, 2017. From the beginning of my time at CF Utica I always felt welcome and cared about. Thank you, Sarah Appleton, for pushing me! And thank you to my coaches who were incredible in so many ways!
WHAT IMPACT HAS PRIME HAD ON YOUR LIFE IN AND OUT OF THE GYM?
Our gym – the owners, coaches, members, the workouts, the camaraderie – have all had such a positive impact on my life. I have my share of fears, and I can’t tell you how much the coaches have helped me overcome them (not just gym fears)!!!! I am so grateful!!!! I am also healthier and in better shape than I was in my 50’s. I am physically stronger and have more energy. I have new friends who are amazing, and I feel more confident in many ways. Thank you, CF Utica aka Prime!
IF YOU HAD TO PICK YOUR LAST MEAL WHAT WOULD IT BE?
My last meal would be pizza from DeFazio’s, which doesn’t exist anymore. I have celiac disease, so I have had only gluten free pizza for the last 20 years . GF pizza is not the same! Lol!
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE QUOTE AND WHY?
My favorite quote: “The highest form of wisdom is kindness.” (The Talmud) Although I have lots of quotes I like and that resonate with me, this one means the most to me. . . just because I truly believe that kindness is a vital component of our mental and physical survival on this planet.
IF YOU COULD BE ANY ANIMAL IN THE WORLD, WHAT WOULD IT BE AND WHY?
Animal: I think I’d be some kind of bear because I think of them as snuggly and cuddly, and that’s me. Also, though, I think of a mama bear protecting her children. My children are my life . . .even though they are young adults, and I am naturally pretty mild mannered and quiet and kind if anyone messes with my kids I’ll be that protective Mother Bear!
WHAT DOES A DAY IN THE LIFE OF SUZANNE LOOK LIKE OUTSIDE OF BEING A STUD CROSSFITTER?
A day in my life – I’m pretty basic . . .I start my day with a message to my son (who never answers, which is fine . . . just want him to know I’m thinking about him.. . he’s a fighter pilot in the USAF so I like to remind him every day how much I love him) and wait for a phone call from my daughter. She is amazing and strong and beautiful. Then, of course, most weekdays I go to the gym. ☺ Kindness and tolerance and hard work are important to me. I have my own therapy practice out of my home; I also market a line of health and wellness products. I teach yoga one day a week. And mostly I love to be aware of how grateful I am for all I have (my kids at the top of the list) . . . and our CF Utica/Prime family. Thank you to all the coaches and staff for believing in me!
